Uganda Detains 28 Kenyan Fishermen for Illegal Activities on Lake Victoria

The 155 Marine Battalion has detained 28 Kenyan nationals suspected of illegal fishing activities within Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria. The individuals are accused of utilizing prohibited fishing gear, specifically targeting the capture of mukene (silverfish).

The detentions took place on Saturday night as part of a broader marine operation. This operation followed closely on the heels of the destruction of an estimated Shs7 billion worth of illegal fishing equipment. This confiscated gear, which included nets and lighting devices, had been seized from both Ugandan and Kenyan fishers and was destroyed on Dolwe Island.

Some of the detained Kenyan fishermen claimed they were unaware of crossing into Ugandan territory due to a lack of clear boundary markers on the lake. They also suggested that fisheries authorities in Kenya do not provide the same level of guidance on approved fishing methods as they perceive is offered in Uganda, where banned gear is reportedly used openly.

However, in an effort to foster good relations within the East African Community, the Resident District Commissioner for Namayingo, Mr. Emmy Mitala, ordered the release of the 28 fishermen. While released, their boats were confiscated and will be returned without the prohibited fishing equipment. A meeting is planned to discuss the demarcation of boundaries between the two countries.

Marine commanders have stated that future operations will focus on those who import and sell illegal fishing gear, in collaboration with local landing site committees. They have also issued stern warnings against the use of prohibited equipment, emphasizing the need for sustainable fishing practices to protect fish stocks.
