UAE Lifts Ebola Entry Curbs on Ugandans

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has eased entry restrictions that were placed on Ugandan citizens, signaling a significant step following Uganda’s successful containment of the Ebola virus.
The decision, announced by the UAE’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) on Saturday, comes after Uganda fulfilled the required international monitoring period after the outbreak’s cessation.
Previously, on June 6, the UAE had suspended new visas for nationals from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and South Sudan as a precautionary measure against the importation of Ebola. Travelers arriving from these nations also faced entry limitations unless they had spent at least 21 days outside the affected countries.
While the restrictions on Uganda have now been lifted, similar measures remain in place for the DRC and South Sudan due to the ongoing epidemiological concerns in those regions. NCEMA, in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, stated that they will continue to monitor global Ebola developments and adjust policies based on risk assessments.
Uganda officially declared its Ebola outbreak over on July 28, having completed the necessary surveillance period without any new transmissions. The initial outbreak, declared on May 15, involved imported cases from the DRC and resulted in 20 confirmed cases, 18 recoveries, and two deaths.
