Authorities in the Kiruhura district, in conjunction with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and police forces, have conducted a forceful eviction operation around Lake Kakyera. The action targeted individuals who had established settlements and cultivated crops within the protected wetland boundaries. During the operation, more than 30 houses were reportedly set ablaze, and agricultural produce, including onions, tomatoes, and various vegetables, was destroyed.

NEMA officials stated that the evictions were necessary to safeguard the lake’s ecosystem. Deborah Namara, the Kiruhura District Environment Officer, explained that cultivation within the wetlands poses a significant risk. She highlighted concerns that chemical pesticides and fertilizers used in farming could leach directly into Lake Kakyera, endangering aquatic life and potentially contaminating the broader water system that serves multiple districts.

Furthermore, Namara pointed out that soil erosion from the cultivated gardens surrounding the lake could lead to silting, gradually reducing the lake’s depth and impacting its health. Many affected farmers expressed dismay, lamenting the loss of crops that were nearing harvest and significant investments made in their gardens.

Some residents alleged that local leaders had previously collected substantial sums of money, reportedly up to Shs5 million from some individuals, while promising protection from eviction. These farmers have appealed to the government for alternative resettlement options, emphasizing the loss of both their homes and livelihoods. Resident District Commissioner George Bakunda reiterated previous warnings for people to vacate the area voluntarily and warned against any attempts to return or cultivate there, stating that offenders would face arrest.

NEMA is enforcing a 200-meter buffer zone around the lake, prohibiting any form of settlement or cultivation. The authority indicated that the operation would continue to ensure compliance and protect the fragile environment of Lake Kakyera.
