Nakeeya Alleges Violence, Witness Intimidation in Kalungu Election Petition Against Minister Ssekindi

Hellen Nakeeya, the former National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for the Kalungu District Woman Member of Parliament seat, has presented allegations of significant violence and electoral misconduct before the High Court in Masaka. Nakeeya is petitioning to have the election of incumbent Aisha Ssekindi, the current State Minister for Water, annulled.

During her testimony, Nakeeya accused Ssekindi and her supporters of involvement in the deaths of two of Nakeeya’s campaign workers, Gerald Katumba and Frank Miyiingo. The incident, where the two men were reportedly shot on the eve of the January 15, 2026, election while distributing appointment letters, has raised serious concerns for Nakeeya.

Furthermore, Nakeeya contends that the Kalungu District Electoral Commission failed to adequately address her complaints regarding electoral irregularities. She also voiced concerns about alleged attempts to prevent her witnesses from testifying in court. Nakeeya urged the court to thoroughly examine all presented evidence to establish the truth.

Minister Ssekindi has denied all allegations, including any link to the shooting incident or the vehicle mentioned. She stated she was at her home when the alleged occurrences took place, directly disputing Nakeeya’s claims.

The Kalungu District Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Teddy Nabukenya, also testified, stating she was unaware of any fatalities on polling day. The petition further cites alleged vote rigging and other irregularities as grounds for challenging Ssekindi’s victory.

With the evidence-hearing phase concluded, both parties are preparing to present their final submissions to the court for a determination on the petition.
