Martha Karua mourns father, Mwalimu Jackson Karua

Ms. Martha Karua, a prominent Kenyan politician and lawyer, has announced the death of her father, Mwalimu Jackson Karua. The sad news was shared on Sunday evening, September 27, with Karua stating that her father passed away in Kirinyaga, where he had been receiving care for an undisclosed health condition.

Karua fondly remembered her father as her “foundation and pillar,” crediting him for unwavering support throughout her childhood and professional journey. She recounted a poignant final visit with her siblings, where they sang gospel hymns together, unaware it would be their last shared moment.

“My father believed in me long before I had achieved anything worth celebrating,” Karua stated in a release. “From my school days, through my career in law, and through the many chapters of my public life. He remained one of my strongest supporters, always proud, always encouraging, and always in my corner.”

She also described her father as a principled man, a dedicated teacher, and someone who deeply valued character, education, and integrity. His passing is noted as a profound loss not only to his children and grandchildren but also to the broader family and the many individuals whose lives he touched.

Kenyan President William Ruto extended his condolences, acknowledging Mwalimu Jackson Karua’s lifelong dedication to teaching and service. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. May God grant them strength and comfort, and may the soul of Mwalimu Jackson Karua rest in eternal peace,” President Ruto posted on social media.

Ms. Karua is also known in Uganda for her legal representation of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye.
