Kyabazinga Inspires Basoga Diaspora in Dubai: Preserve Culture, Invest Home

The King of Busoga, William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Gabula Nadiope IV, recently celebrated his 12th coronation anniversary with the Basoga community residing in Dubai. The event, organized by the Busoga Yaiffe UAE Chapter, served as a platform for the Kyabazinga to commend the industriousness of the Ugandan diaspora in the United Arab Emirates.
He lauded the organizers for their unity and for proudly showcasing Busoga’s culture through traditional attire and performances. The Kyabazinga encouraged those living abroad to not only support their families back home but also to invest in Uganda’s growth. Specific investment avenues suggested included building homes and engaging in long-term agricultural ventures like coffee and cocoa farming.
Ambassador Zaake Kibedi, Uganda’s representative in the UAE, welcomed the Kyabazinga and provided insights into the diverse Ugandan workforce present. He noted the significant demand for agricultural exports such as avocados and sweet potatoes in the UAE market and highlighted existing Emirati investments in Uganda, like those by Modern.
Minister Milly Babalanda Babirye emphasized the importance of cultural preservation, urging the diaspora to maintain their identity by speaking Lusoga, educating their children about Busoga’s history and traditions, and remaining proud of their heritage. She called for unity and networking to foster development within Busoga.
Dr. Aggrey David Kibenge, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, discussed government efforts to protect Ugandan workers abroad and encouraged participation in the NSSF voluntary savings scheme for retirement planning. He acknowledged the diaspora’s economic contributions through remittances and businesses.
The celebration, themed “Inspiring a new generation to carry the values, vision and legacy of Busoga forward,” underscored the institution’s commitment to supporting investment within the kingdom. The event concluded with a call for the Dubai celebration to become an annual tradition.
