Kabalega Airport Commissioning Extended to January 2027

The highly anticipated commissioning of Kabalega International Airport has been pushed back once again, now slated for January 2027. This marks the seventh postponement for the project, which was initially expected to be operational by December 2023.
Officials have cited a series of challenges, including funding gaps and the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as reasons for the repeated delays. Previous target dates included February 2024, August 2025, March 2026, July 2026, and October 2026.
Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama confirmed the new timeline, stating that the contractor is currently finalizing the runway’s lighting system. Upon completion of this final phase, the airport will be handed over, paving the way for its eventual commissioning.
The Shs1.18 trillion airport, which is reportedly larger than Entebbe International Airport, is strategically located near industrial parks and the country’s oil wells, positioning it as a key asset for Uganda’s burgeoning oil and gas industry.
The ongoing delays have raised concerns about the project’s timeline and its impact on related economic developments. The Civil Aviation Authority is proceeding with the gazetting process for the airport, indicating continued progress despite the commissioning setbacks.
