Ezoova LC1 Election Dispute Hampers Services in Arua City

The electoral process in Ezoova Cell, located in Driwala Ward, Ayivu West Division of Arua City, has become a significant concern for residents. They are appealing for a quick resolution to a petition that contests the outcome of the Ezoova Local Council One (LC1) election.

The ongoing dispute is reportedly hindering the community’s access to crucial government services that are typically facilitated through the LC1 office. This delay is causing frustration among the residents who rely on these services for various community needs.

The petition was lodged by Jane Japyem, who ran as a candidate for the National Resistance Movement (NRM). She is challenging the victory of independent candidate Swadik Abiriga, who was officially declared the winner. In the election, Abiriga secured 307 votes out of 702 cast, with Japyem receiving 234 votes.

Japyem has stated that the election was neither free nor fair, citing a “lot of violence” throughout the process, from party primaries to the general election. Conversely, Abiriga has refuted these claims, describing the election as one of the most peaceful in Ezoova’s history and expressing surprise at the complaint.

Osman Ezale, the Arua City Returning Officer, confirmed that the Ezoova LC1 results are under challenge. He indicated that the complaint has been escalated to the Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Kampala and urged all parties to exercise patience while awaiting a decision.

Community members are keen for the matter to be settled promptly so that the LC1 office can effectively resume its functions and address local issues without further interruption.
