Church of Uganda Cites Liturgical Rules After Abim Church Scuffle

The Church of Uganda has issued a statement emphasizing the established liturgical procedures governing announcements and proceedings during church services. This clarification comes in the wake of a disruptive incident at All Saints Church in Abim Town Council, where a physical altercation transpired between a parish priest and a local council leader during a Sunday service.

According to Mr. Sadiiki Adams, the Communication Officer for the Church of Uganda, the priest presiding over a service is solely responsible for its direction and all associated activities. Any individual wishing to make an announcement must first obtain permission from the presiding priest and adhere to any guidance provided.

The scuffle involved Rev. Canon Richard Ongom, a retired clergy member, and Mr. Innocent Oyoo, the LCII chairperson for Waimer Ward. Mr. Oyoo stated he had been asked to deliver important security updates and information about government programs to the congregation. He claimed Rev. Ongom reacted aggressively when he requested just two minutes to speak.

However, Rev. Ongom defended his actions, explaining that the day’s service was specifically dedicated to Uganda Christian University, with scheduled sermons. He advised Mr. Oyoo that such announcements require prior church administration approval, typically two days in advance, to prevent misinformation. Rev. Ongom then proceeded to halt the service and reported the incident to the police and church leadership.

The Church of Uganda indicated it will permit the police to investigate the physical altercation. Simultaneously, relevant church authorities will address any ecclesiastical and administrative matters stemming from the event, aiming for an amicable resolution.
