Tourism Minister Leads Mbale Clean-Up for World Tourism Day

Ahead of the 2026 World Tourism Day celebrations, the Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Susan Nakawuki Nsambu, joined Mbale City leaders, local officials, residents, and tourism stakeholders in a significant clean-up initiative. This National Cleaning Day exercise underscores the crucial link between a pristine environment and the flourishing of the tourism sector.

Minister Nsambu emphasized that a clean environment is not only vital for attracting visitors but also for the general well-being of the communities. “When our cities, communities and tourist destinations are clean, we create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors while improving the quality of life for our people,” she stated during the event.

Echoing these sentiments, Hon Lydia Wanyoto highlighted the importance of community involvement in maintaining urban cleanliness. She noted that while government support is essential, sustainable change hinges on the active participation of every citizen, making cleanliness a shared responsibility.

The clean-up also drew attention to the connection between sanitation, public health, and the visitor experience. Stakeholders pointed out that clean streets, markets, and cultural sites significantly enhance the appeal of a destination.

Local leaders urged Mbale residents to adopt cleanliness as a daily habit, rather than an occasional activity. They stressed that Mbale’s tourism potential can be fully realized with a strong foundation of cleanliness, encouraging everyone to take pride in and protect the city’s public spaces.

The exercise forms part of broader preparations for World Tourism Day, which this year focuses on promoting responsible, inclusive, and sustainable tourism. Officials and stakeholders are advocating for stronger partnerships to advance conservation, environmental protection, and tourism development across Uganda, calling on the public to embrace responsible tourism practices.
