EACOP Invests Shs 1.9 Billion in New Hoima Maternity Ward

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), in collaboration with the Hoima District Local Government, has officially broken ground on a significant Shs 1.9 billion maternity ward project. The new facility will be located at Mbaraara Health Centre II in Kitoba Town Council, Hoima District.

The construction launch, held on Friday, was attended by key figures including Guillaume Dulout, Managing Director of EACOP, and Dr. Fred Kabagambe Kaliisa, Senior Presidential Advisor on Oil and Gas Development. Local district leaders and Members of Parliament also graced the event.

Guillaume Dulout highlighted that EACOP’s corporate social responsibility efforts are focused on vital community sectors such as health, youth development, water, and sustainable energy. This maternity ward is a testament to that commitment, designed to bring safer delivery services closer to expectant mothers and reduce the burden of long-distance travel for care.

In response to the project, the Ministry of Health, through Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine, has directed Hoima District authorities to begin preparations for upgrading Mbaraara Health Centre II to a Health Centre III. This upgrade is intended to meet the escalating demand for health services in the region.

Hoima District Chairperson Uthuman Mugisha Mubarak expressed gratitude to EACOP for their contribution and for selecting Mbaraara Health Centre II. He acknowledged the previous challenges mothers faced due to the distance to existing maternity facilities and pledged the district’s support for the upgrade.

Bugahya County MP Pius Wakabi also spoke about ongoing efforts to secure an ambulance for the constituency and advocated for a new secondary school to serve the growing population.

The construction, being undertaken by Kaleeta Construction Limited, is projected to be completed within six months. Additionally, EACOP provided essential support items to expectant mothers at the health center, an initiative that Dr. Fred Kabagambe Kaliisa stated would aid in reducing maternal mortality. He also encouraged the adoption of family planning practices.
