The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has shed light on how it determines the annual interest rate credited to members’ accounts. This rate is not a fixed figure but rather a dynamic outcome influenced by several critical financial considerations.

Central to the NSSF’s interest rate declaration is the fund’s overall investment performance. The returns generated from the NSSF’s diverse portfolio, which includes real estate, fixed income, and equities, form the primary basis for the interest paid out. The NSSF aims for a consistent, competitive return that outpaces inflation, thereby preserving and growing the value of members’ savings over time.

Beyond just investment yields, the NSSF also factors in its operational efficiency and administrative costs. Keeping these costs low allows a larger portion of the investment returns to be passed on to members as interest. The fund’s management continuously works to optimize operations and reduce expenditure.

Furthermore, the NSSF considers the need to maintain adequate reserves and ensure the long-term solvency and sustainability of the fund. While aiming to provide the highest possible interest rate, the NSSF must also balance this with its fiduciary duty to safeguard members’ contributions for the future.

The fund has historically aimed to achieve an annual return of approximately 2% above inflation, a target that guides its investment strategy and provides a benchmark for its performance. This strategic approach ensures that members’ savings not only keep pace with the rising cost of living but also grow in real terms.
