Naguru Hospital Sees Up to 10 Boda Boda Emergencies Daily, New Project Launched

China-Uganda Friendship Hospital Naguru is grappling with a significant number of daily emergencies stemming from boda boda accidents, reporting between five and 10 such cases every day. These incidents involve not only riders and their passengers but also pedestrians and occupants of other vehicles, placing a considerable strain on the hospital’s emergency services.

Dr. Irene Nayiga, the hospital’s head, stated that road accidents constitute the largest portion of the approximately 14,000 trauma and emergency cases treated at the facility in the past financial year. While the hospital has invested in its emergency department and equipment, Dr. Nayiga emphasized that accident prevention is crucial.

The boda boda sector, while a vital source of employment, needs to become safer to protect those who rely on it for their livelihood. Recognizing this critical issue, the Community Integrated Development Initiatives (CIDI) has launched a new three-year project called the Boda Health and Safety Project.

This initiative aims to reduce motorcycle-related accidents and strengthen emergency response capabilities within Kampala. Initially, the project will focus on the Nakawa Division, working with around 25 boda boda stages. It will include training for boda boda riders on first aid, emergency response, health, and safety protocols through their respective associations.

The project is a collaborative effort involving CIDI, Danish People’s Aid, health facilities, police, local authorities, and boda boda associations. Beyond promoting helmet use, the project intends to equip riders with the skills to provide immediate first aid and respond effectively during emergencies. Health committees will also be established within boda boda associations to ensure the long-term sustainability of these safety measures.
