Abim District Launches Formal Gold Mine After Standoff with Illegal Miners

Following a protracted standoff with illegal miners, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has officially launched a new artisanal gold mine in Okemer Village, Abim District. The Kakoka Artisanal Mining Cooperative Society Limited has secured a license, AML006644, to operate on a 40-acre tract of land designated for the community.
This development is a significant step towards formalizing mining activities in the Karamoja Sub-region, an area where artisanal mining is a vital source of income for many. Local leaders view the mine as a crucial initiative to combat poverty and provide sustainable livelihoods.
Abim District Woman Member of Parliament, Joyce Ayo Makamoi, highlighted the mine’s potential to create employment not only for the youth but also for women who can contribute by supplying food and other services to the mining operations. The project is projected to create jobs for over 10,000 people, fostering broader economic benefits for residents.
Denis Okawa, executive director of the Kakoka Miners Cooperative Society Limited, reported that over 2,500 miners have already been registered. He emphasized that even those not directly involved in mining can find employment in supporting roles, such as food vending.
The partnership with Euro Gold Refinery Limited has been met with enthusiasm, as it is expected to bring training and resources to local miners, promoting more sustainable and formal mining practices. State Minister for Mineral Development Fiona Nyamutoro stressed the importance of environmental protection, vowing to promote practices that reduce pollution, improve waste management, and ensure site rehabilitation post-extraction.
Minister Nyamutoro encouraged all aspiring miners to engage with the ministry for proper licensing. She also announced plans to establish government-supported gold buying centers across the country, including in Abim, to ensure miners receive fair prices and avoid exploitation by unscrupulous buyers. Security around the mine has been significantly enhanced, with Abim Resident District Commissioner Robert Adiama Ekaju assuring investors and miners of maximum protection.
