Ibanda Public Officials Targeted for Asset Declaration to Curb Corruption

Public servants in Ibanda District are now required to submit declarations of their income, assets, and liabilities through the Inspectorate of Government’s Online Declaration System (IG-ODS). This measure is a key part of broader efforts to improve accountability and prevent corrupt practices.

Sarah Magoola, the Mbarara Regional Head for the Inspectorate of Government (IG), emphasized the importance of this declaration process during a recent stakeholder meeting held at the Ibanda District headquarters. The meeting was convened to mobilize both the public and local leaders in the ongoing fight against corruption.

Magoola highlighted that the declaration of property and financial standing serves as a critical mechanism for fostering transparency and accountability among public officials. “Declaration of property, assets and liabilities helps to reduce corruption because it promotes financial transparency and provides a system of checks and balances,” she stated.

By requiring public officers to disclose their wealth, a verifiable record is established. This record can then be used to scrutinize their financial interests and identify any wealth that appears to be unexplained. Magoola explained that this process makes it significantly harder for officials to hide illicitly acquired wealth, particularly funds gained through the misuse of public resources.

She urged all public officers in Ibanda District to adhere to these declaration requirements and utilize the online platform for submissions. Furthermore, Magoola called upon citizens to actively participate in the anti-corruption drive by reporting any suspected cases of public office abuse to the appropriate authorities.

“The fight against corruption cannot be left to the Inspectorate of Government alone. Citizens and public officers have a responsibility to report corruption and protect public resources,” Magoola concluded.

These engagements are part of the IG’s ongoing strategy to raise public awareness and encourage broader participation in preventing and reporting corruption nationwide. The Inspectorate continues to promote digital solutions like the IG-ODS to streamline asset declarations and bolster transparency in public service.
