Crested Cranes Unveil Strong 34-Player Squad for Zambia Olympic Qualifiers

The Crested Cranes are gearing up for the second round of the 2028 Olympic Women’s Football qualifiers with a robust squad of 34 players, as they aim to secure a spot in the Los Angeles Games.

Head coach Sheryl Ulanda Botes has meticulously selected players across all positions, including four goalkeepers, sixteen defenders, twelve midfielders, and six forwards, for the decisive two-legged tie against Zambia. The first match is set for October 8, 2026, followed by the return leg on October 13.

The selected squad boasts a blend of international and professional experience. Notable inclusions are goalkeepers Vanessa Edith Karungi (Brondby IF Women) and Ruth Aturo (Simba Queens). Midfield talent is represented by Phiona Nabbumba (FC Midtjylland) and Megan Mukiibi (ENMU Women Soccer).

Experienced forwards like Fazila Ikwaput (East Bengal WFC), Sylvia Kabene (Mġarr United Women FC), and Karin Muya (Watford Women FC) are set to bolster the team’s attacking prowess. They are joined by other forwards Mary Kantono, Jesca Namanda, and Joanitah Ainembabazi.

The expanded technical team supporting coach Botes includes assistant coach Colines Ahumuza, goalkeeping coach Cissy Gaudensia Nakiguba, sports scientist Moses William Nkata, and video analyst Allan Magunda Nsubuga, among other support staff. This comprehensive setup underscores the team’s serious approach to the Olympic qualification journey.
