Busoga Premier Calls for High-Quality University Amidst Prayer Week

During the third day of the 2026 Busoga Prayer Week, Prime Minister Joseph Muvawala called upon leaders to demand a university of high caliber for the Busoga region. He expressed concern over the prospect of a “low-standard university” being established, emphasizing that the institution must be capable of providing quality education, equipping students with relevant skills, and contributing to the long-term socio-economic transformation of the area.

Muvawala urged collective action, stating, “Busoga leaders must collectively raise the matter with the relevant authorities. We should not remain silent on institutions that have a direct bearing on the future of our young people.” He specifically tasked Steven Kisa, the Luuka South MP and organizing committee chairman, to engage the Speaker of Parliament on this critical issue.

Beyond higher education, the Prime Minister also stressed the importance of leaders taking greater responsibility for strengthening regional institutions. He called for competent leadership in schools founded by the Anglican Church, urging the Bishop of Busoga Diocese to appoint capable boards. Muvawala also encouraged leaders to move past past disagreements and focus on unifying issues that can accelerate Busoga’s development, advocating for change to begin at the household level.

The discussions also touched upon the Parish Development Model (PDM), with Muvawala encouraging productive use of funds to stimulate local economic growth. He welcomed the increase in PDM financing and called for greater financial inclusion. Religious leaders were urged to use their platforms to explain government programs and encourage beneficiaries to engage in productive economic activities, aligning with the Prayer Week’s theme of “Let’s Rise Up and Rebuild.”

This call for practical action was echoed by Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, who emphasized households taking charge of their economic well-being. The Busoga Consortium for Development also reiterated its commitment to advancing regional priorities through coordination with various stakeholders, focusing on key sectors for socio-economic transformation under the Busoga Vision 2030 agenda.
