While Ugandans are known for their politeness and warmth in social settings, this cordiality frequently dissipates when it comes to commercial transactions. The typical customer-service provider dynamic often devolves into an adversarial one, leaving consumers feeling shortchanged and disrespected.

A stark example of this issue is the experience of a customer, referred to as Mulyagonja, who sought to renew his expired ATM card’s password at his bank. What should have been a straightforward 30-minute process stretched into over two weeks of frustration.

Initially, Mulyagonja was promised a one-time password (OTP) via text message to facilitate the reset. However, the crucial message never arrived. For the subsequent two weeks, the bank’s customer care desk seemed determined to avoid him. He observed that staff members often appeared perpetually busy, even during periods with no other customers present.

Attempts by Mulyagonja to approach vacant seats, hoping to explain his predicament, were met with dismissive waves from stressed-looking personnel. This indicates a systemic issue where efficiency and customer well-being are not prioritized, leading to prolonged and unnecessary customer struggles. The current state of customer service in many Ugandan businesses requires significant attention and improvement to meet modern expectations for speed, convenience, and a positive experience.
