Uganda is setting its sights on a massive economic expansion, aiming to grow its economy from an estimated $50 billion to a remarkable $500 billion by the year 2040. A key strategy in this ambitious plan involves empowering women entrepreneurs, whose enterprises are seen as instrumental to this growth.
Minister for Science and Innovation, Eng. Jonard Asiimwe, highlighted that bolstering the earnings of women, who form a significant portion of small business owners, could profoundly impact household incomes and the broader national economy. He emphasized the need for both the government and financial institutions to enhance access to financing, skills development, and market opportunities for these businesses.
This focus was underscored at a recent event in Kampala where five women-led technology startups received a collective $50,000 (approximately Shs185 million) in funding. This initiative is a collaboration between the Standard Chartered Foundation and Innovation Village.
Sanjay Rughani, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, affirmed the role of financial institutions in nurturing innovators who tackle real-world issues. The selected startups were chosen for their innovative solutions to community challenges.
One such beneficiary is Tina Patience Nanteza, founder of RyzoneCare. Her startup is developing a QR-enabled personal health record system, allowing patients to centralize their medical information. Nanteza, a nurse, was inspired to create this system after witnessing a patient die from an allergic reaction, highlighting the critical need for accessible medical histories.
The recent funding is poised to support these five startups in refining their products and scaling their operations, aiming to transform their innovative ideas into sustainable businesses that contribute to Uganda’s economic resurgence.
