Woman Dead, Three Injured in Malaba Verandah Collapse

A residential verandah in Malaba Town, Tororo District, collapsed on Saturday, leading to the death of Evelyn Akuron, 37, and injuries to three other individuals, two of whom are children. The incident occurred in Malaba “B” East Cell, trapping the victims under the rubble when the structure gave way.

Ms. Akuron was taken to Special Plaza Hospital in Tororo Town but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The injured were transported to Tororo General Hospital for medical attention.

Local residents noted that the house was old and the verandah had visible cracks, which were exacerbated by the current heavy rains. Concerns about the structural integrity of the verandah had been previously raised by the community to the homeowners.

“This verandah has been weak for long. We had warned them, but they had nowhere else to sit when it rained. It collapsed within seconds,” stated area LC1 chairperson, Mr. Josophat Nalapa.

Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, Inspector of Police Johnson Moses Mugwe, confirmed the event and stated that an investigation is ongoing. He urged residents to inspect their homes, particularly during the rainy season when building materials can weaken. The police also advised local authorities to enforce building codes to ensure safety standards are met and prevent future tragedies.

The body of the deceased was transferred to Rubongi Barracks Army Hospital mortuary for preservation following a postmortem examination.
