UNOC-Vitol Partnership Crucial for Kampala Fuel Storage Terminal

The ambitious plan to construct the Kampala Storage Terminal (KST), a project aimed at bolstering Uganda’s fuel reserves, received a significant boost through a strategic partnership between the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) and Vitol. The mandate for developing the KST was officially assigned to UNOC in 2018, following the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development’s approval of its strategic roadmap in 2017.

UNOC’s development strategy for the KST was predicated on securing a capable joint venture partner. This led to the initiation of a partner selection process in February 2019. The collaboration with Vitol, a global energy and commodity trading company, proved pivotal in overcoming the substantial capital and technical hurdles associated with a project of this magnitude.

The partnership is expected to add approximately 320 million liters to Uganda’s national fuel storage capacity. This expansion is crucial for enhancing the country’s energy security, enabling better management of fuel supply chains, and potentially stabilizing fuel prices. The KST project is a cornerstone of UNOC’s broader strategy to strengthen Uganda’s position in the oil and gas sector and ensure a reliable supply of petroleum products.

The involvement of a partner like Vitol brings not only financial investment but also crucial technical expertise and international market access, accelerating the project’s timeline and ensuring its efficient execution. This collaboration underscores UNOC’s commitment to leveraging strategic alliances to achieve its national development objectives in the energy sector.
