PLU cautions NRM faithful against undermining Muhoozi's 2031 presidential ambitions

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has publicly cautioned members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) against actions that could jeopardize the 2031 presidential aspirations of its chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Gen. Kainerugaba, currently serving as the Chief of Defence Forces, is legally restricted from holding political office while in active military service and would need to resign to pursue electoral ambitions.

The organization, which is actively mobilizing support for Muhoozi nationwide, stressed that its activities operate within the broader NRM framework. Jimmy Lwanga, a PLU coordinator for Greater Mukono, urged NRM supporters to embrace Muhoozi’s ambitions, stating that “everything PLU does has the president’s endorsement.” He advised against “hatred which lead to making the party candidates at parliamentary and local levels lose elections.”

PLU has initiated a countrywide campaign involving the distribution of endorsement books through its established structures. The campaign aims to galvanize support for Muhoozi ahead of the 2031 general elections.

During a recent event in Mukono, former State Minister for Water, Ronald Kibuule, strongly endorsed Gen. Muhoozi, describing him as a leader “prepared for national responsibility” and the “right time for the general to offer light and a new direction for this country.” Mukono Resident District Commissioner, Hajjati Fatumah Ndisaba Nabitaka, commended the PLU’s mobilization efforts, noting the absence of demands for transport allowances, which she contrasted with typical NRM gatherings. She praised the “serious signal that people indeed love the general.”

PLU coordinators have highlighted internal conflicts and a perceived lack of seriousness within the NRM as factors weakening the party in certain regions. They aim to foster a more transparent approach to political mobilization, using registration books that resemble traditional NRM materials to create a sense of familiarity among supporters.
