Parliament vets nominees for Public Service Commission, FIA

The Appointments Committee of Parliament has rigorously examined nine individuals nominated by President Yoweri Museveni to serve on the Public Service Commission (PSC). Leading the nominees for the Chairperson position is Vincent Seruma, with Jane Sanyu Mpagi nominated as his deputy.
The committee, under the chairmanship of Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth, engaged with each nominee to assess their suitability for the crucial roles within the Public Service Commission. This process is a constitutional requirement, ensuring that appointments made by the President meet parliamentary scrutiny.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa confirmed the completion of these vetting sessions via X (formerly Twitter). He indicated that the committee’s deliberations and resolutions would be submitted to the appointing authority for final action, a standard procedure in such appointments.
Beyond the PSC nominees, the committee also interviewed Maris Wanyera, who is designated to represent the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development on the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) board. This ensures a thorough review of key oversight and public service management bodies.
President Museveni’s nominations followed a selection process approved by him, based on a report from Principal Judge Flavian Zeija. The President explicitly endorsed both the evaluation criteria and the final list of candidates, directing that this method be used for future appointments. He also named reserve candidates, Sine Paul Claude and Dr. Mackay Akoori Ecuman Okure, for the PSC.
The Public Service Commission, established by Article 165(1) of the Constitution, is mandated with overseeing public service recruitment and offering guidance to District Service Commissions nationwide. Its effective functioning is vital for maintaining a professional and efficient public administration.
