The Ugandan government has announced plans to welcome back approximately 190 former senior officials of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party. These individuals sought refuge in Zambia over four decades ago, following the military coup that ousted party leader Dr. Apollo Milton Obote in July 1985.
The group, who were senior figures during Obote’s second term in government, have reportedly approached the Ugandan authorities expressing their desire to return home. The government has indicated its commitment to facilitating their repatriation.
This move marks a significant step in reconciling with a segment of the population who were politically displaced during a tumultuous period in Uganda’s history. The returnees are expected to contribute to national development and political discourse.
Further details regarding the logistical arrangements and timelines for their return are anticipated to be released by the relevant government ministries in the coming weeks. The government emphasized its dedication to national unity and encouraging all Ugandans, regardless of past political affiliations or circumstances, to contribute to the country’s progress.
