Late Kenyan Politician Cyrus Jirongo Credited with Inspiring Uganda's Direct Fuel Import Strategy

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has expressed his profound sadness upon learning of the death of the late Kenyan politician and former Cabinet Minister, Cyrus Jirongo. President Museveni conveyed that he was unaware of Jirongo’s passing, which occurred in a road accident late last year.

In a statement shared on his official X account, the Ugandan President extended his deepest sympathies to Jirongo’s family and loved ones. Museveni lauded Jirongo as a devoted patriot whose contributions had a tangible impact on Uganda’s approach to regional trade, particularly concerning fuel importation.

“I have just learnt that Senator Cyrus Jirongo passed away last December in a motor accident. I was not aware that he had died,” President Museveni stated. “This is very sad. Jirongo was a good and patriotic leader who served his country with dedication. We shall miss him.”

The late Kenyan politician’s insights were instrumental in shaping Uganda’s strategy to move towards direct fuel importation. This policy shift aimed to bypass intermediaries, potentially leading to more stable fuel prices and supply within Uganda. Jirongo’s advocacy for such direct import schemes was a key factor in persuading the Ugandan government to adopt this approach, demonstrating the significant influence he wielded beyond Kenya’s borders.

President Museveni concluded his message with “My condolences go to his family, relatives, friends and the people of Kenya. May his soul rest in peace.”
