Dubai Mourns Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, 76

Dubai has lost a prominent royal figure with the passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of the emirate’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Sheikh Ahmed died at the age of 76, prompting an announcement from the Dubai Media Office on Monday morning.

In response to his death, Dubai has declared ten days of official mourning, during which all flags will be flown at half-mast. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who also serves as the UAE’s Vice-President and Prime Minister, shared a heartfelt message on social media, mourning his brother and praying for his soul.

Condolences have poured in from across the UAE. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan acknowledged Sheikh Ahmed’s significant contributions to the nation’s development since its inception, stating his legacy will continue to inspire progress. Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum remembered his late uncle as a beloved family member who will remain in their hearts and prayers.

Born in 1950, Sheikh Ahmed was the youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. After graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he embarked on a distinguished career, eventually commanding Dubai’s Central Military Region. He later held the position of Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security.

Sheikh Ahmed also had a lasting impact on sports and community initiatives. He was a long-serving president of Al Wasl Sports Club and played a key role in the development of horse racing in Dubai, establishing the Jebel Ali Racecourse. Furthermore, he chaired the Dubai International Marine Club, showcasing his diverse interests and leadership.

The ruling family has had past engagements with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, discussing bilateral relations, investment, and tourism cooperation. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, founded by Sheikh Mohammed, has also supported humanitarian efforts in Uganda, including a significant food campaign in Kampala.
