As the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York this week, global leaders find themselves grappling with a world order under significant strain. The assembly is marked by the return of US President Donald Trump, whose administration has previously questioned the UN’s relevance and reduced its financial contributions. This year’s summit faces critical discussions on the escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as the rapidly advancing risks associated with artificial intelligence.
Nearly 130 heads of state are in attendance, a gathering occurring at a time when the UN itself is struggling with its role and influence. The United States, while avoiding a loss of voting rights by settling its dues, still owes substantial amounts and continues to press for reforms. The relevance of the UN is further called into question by the absence of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who will instead hold one-on-one talks with President Trump in Washington, bypassing the international forum.
The Middle East remains a central focus, with the ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran continuing to impact global inflation and regional stability. Houthi advances in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait pose a threat to vital shipping lanes and could lead to further spikes in energy prices. Discussions are also planned regarding the conflict in Sudan.
Ukraine’s protracted war also features prominently on the agenda, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expected to seek continued international support. However, the UN Security Council’s ability to act is hampered by Russia’s veto power. Secretary-General António Guterres has emphasized the war’s severe impact on global food security and energy prices, advocating for safe passage for Ukrainian and Russian exports.
Artificial intelligence presents another significant challenge. Following warnings from industry leaders about AI’s potential to become uncontrollable, UN Secretary-General Guterres plans to make AI governance a key topic. This stance, however, puts him at odds with President Trump, who has downplayed AI risks.
Compounding these geopolitical challenges is the uncertainty surrounding the next Secretary-General, as António Guterres completes his term at the end of 2026 with no clear successor.
