Tooro Kingdom Launches Shs 925 Million Fundraising for King's Coronation

The Tooro Kingdom is gearing up for the grand coronation of its new monarch, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, with an ambitious fundraising target of Shs 925 million. Msgr Isaiah Mayombo, chairperson of the organizing committee, announced the drive, appealing to the people of Tooro, friends of the kingdom, and well-wishers for generous contributions to ensure the success of the September 29 event.

Preparations for the coronation are reportedly proceeding smoothly. Alex Ruhunda, who heads the finance committee, confirmed that a dedicated account has been established at Centenary Bank for donations. Mobile money options are also available for public contributions, making it easier for individuals to support the ceremony.

Distinguished guests are expected to grace the occasion, with President Yoweri Museveni slated to be the chief guest. Invitations have been extended to traditional leaders from both within Uganda and internationally, alongside political figures, business leaders, academics, and the general public, according to organizing committee member Richard Rwabuhinga.

The coronation festivities are set to commence on the night of September 28. The king-elect, Nyabongo, will depart Rwengoma Palace in a procession, making his way to Karuziika Palace via the historic Mugabante gate. A symbolic mock battle at the palace entrance will precede his official entry, where he is expected to be victorious before ascending the throne.

Inside Karuziika Palace, several traditional rituals will be performed. Notably, the royal drums, which were turned upside down following the passing of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, will be set upright. The main coronation day, September 29, will begin with a church service at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal, followed by the formal coronation ceremony at Karuziika Palace.

Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I was chosen as the successor by the Babiito ruling clan, filling the void left by Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away in August at the age of 34.
