Rwandan National Found Dead in Suspected Suicide in Kisoro

Authorities in Kisoro District are investigating the death of Samuel Habiyakare, a 45-year-old Rwandan national, who was found deceased in his rented home on Saturday morning. Police suspect he died by suicide.

According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, Habiyakare allegedly had a dispute with his wife on Friday night, subsequently locking himself inside their home. His body was discovered the following morning.

This incident adds to a growing concern for law enforcement in the Kigezi sub-region, which has seen an uptick in suspected suicide cases. Mr. Tumushime stated that three such cases have been reported in Kisoro District alone this September.

Police are urging individuals facing stress, depression, financial hardship, or domestic conflicts to seek support from their networks, including family, friends, religious leaders, and mental health professionals. The police department plans to collaborate with health workers, civil society organizations, and local leaders to raise awareness about mental health issues and prevent further suicides.

Recent incidents in the region include the case of Babra Katusiime, a 20-year-old student who died by suicide in Kabale District on August 13 after expressing distress over not having an exam paper. Another case involved Fredian Friday, a 53-year-old man in Kanungu District, found hanging on August 6, reportedly due to financial difficulties. A 57-year-old teacher, James Kamari, was also found deceased in his home in Kisoro District on July 27.

Police are emphasizing the importance of seeking help for mental health challenges to prevent such tragic outcomes.
