Museveni: Uganda's stability is a hard-won achievement, not to be taken for granted

President Yoweri Museveni has cautioned Ugandans against taking the nation’s hard-won stability for granted. Speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony in Rukungiri District on Saturday, September 19, 2026, the President, represented by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, highlighted the immense sacrifices, bloodshed, and suffering endured by liberation war veterans.
“The stability you are experiencing today should not be taken for granted because it was achieved through years of armed struggle, loss of lives and personal sacrifices by individuals who participated in the liberation struggle,” Museveni stated. He commended Rujumbura County MP, Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi, for his role in the struggle and thanked the constituents for re-electing him.
The President also seized the opportunity to rally Ugandans to actively engage in government-backed wealth-creation initiatives. He expressed concern that despite numerous poverty-fighting programs, many households remain impoverished. Museveni urged every Ugandan to participate in income-generating activities and make productive use of available opportunities, moving beyond subsistence farming to the money economy.
“I know most of you are only producing for consumption only, but it’s high time you look beyond producing food for consumption and engage in activities which are capable of generating sustainable household incomes,” he added.
Security Minister Jim Muhwezi, the guest of honor at the ceremony, explained that the thanksgiving was to celebrate the political successes of the NRM and the Patriotic League of Uganda. Funds raised during the event, including a Shs100 million contribution from President Museveni, were earmarked for the completion of his home church, Kasoroza Church of Uganda. Over Shs700 million and 200 bags of cement were collected through pledges and contributions.
