Kigezi Diocese Secures Shs1 Billion for Kabale Shopping Mall

The Anglican Diocese of Kigezi is making significant strides in its efforts to achieve financial self-sufficiency through income-generating projects. A recent fundraiser for the Bishop Development Fund (BDF) successfully garnered Shs1 billion, contributing to the construction of a Shs3.1 billion shopping mall in Kabale Town.

This strategic move away from sole reliance on traditional offertories and donations aims to create a sustainable model for funding church development and supporting Christian communities. Canon Ivan Batuma Mbabazi, head of laity at the diocese, emphasized the importance of this shift, stating that the goal is to establish a church that can independently support development programs for its members.

The BDF, established in November 2024, has the shopping mall as its flagship project. Income generated from the mall is expected to significantly supplement the diocese’s finances, allowing for greater investment in various church activities and initiatives.

During the fundraiser, Bishop Gaddie Akanjuna urged for continued accountability, transparency, and diligence in managing the diocese’s finances to ensure the success of its development endeavors. He expressed confidence that with the newly raised funds, the shopping mall will be completed and operational by January next year, serving as a lasting legacy.

The event saw participation from several Members of Parliament representing the districts within the diocese, alongside significant contributions from local businessmen and government officials, underscoring broad support for the project.
