The Chinese Union of Uganda is making a strong appeal to its members and the broader Chinese business community operating in Uganda to contribute more significantly to local charitable causes. Ms. Jane Zhang, the team leader, emphasized that after years of benefiting from operating in Uganda, it’s crucial for Chinese investors to “give back” to the communities that host them.

This call to action comes in the wake of a successful health camp organized by the union in Jinja City. The initiative provided medical attention to approximately 1,000 individuals and distributed essential supplies to vulnerable families. Medical professionals noted a high prevalence of skin conditions, with a dermatologist observing that about 40% of children examined showed symptoms consistent with ringworm. Limited access to clean water for bathing in some rural areas was identified as a contributing factor to these health issues.

Ms. Zhang highlighted that this is not an isolated effort. Numerous other Chinese organizations have partnered with the Chinese Union of Uganda in supporting such community initiatives. Past projects include the construction of schools, sponsoring school fees for orphans in Kabale District, and drilling boreholes to provide clean water at schools and places of worship in Soroti City. These projects aim to alleviate burdens on pupils and residents, such as the need to share water sources with livestock.

With an estimated 350 Chinese companies active in various sectors in Uganda, including trade, project contracting, and resource development, the union believes there is significant potential for increased investment in social responsibility. Ms. Zhang expressed optimism that more Chinese investors will join these philanthropic endeavors to expand their reach and impact more lives.
