Suspected Methanol Poisoning Claims 49 Lives in Nigeria's Ondo State

A severe health crisis has unfolded in Nigeria’s southwestern Ondo state, with officials confirming that 49 people have died and 182 others have been admitted to hospitals following suspected alcohol poisoning. The fatalities began to be reported on September 5, with the number of deaths escalating significantly over the subsequent weeks.

Health Commissioner Banji Ajaka stated that the poisonings are believed to be caused by methanol contamination in a locally produced alcoholic beverage known as “Monkey Tail.” This incident highlights the significant risks associated with unregulated and cheaply available alcoholic drinks, which are prevalent in many parts of Nigeria.

Investigations have traced the outbreak to two traditional ceremonies held in the Odigbo district, where guests were served the illicit alcoholic drink. “The pattern of illness and reported history of exposure have raised strong epidemiological suspicion of exposure to a probable toxic alcoholic substance. However, we are yet to have laboratory evidence,” Ajaka noted in a statement.

Victims experienced a rapid onset of severe symptoms, including intense headaches, body pain, difficulty breathing, altered consciousness, and blindness. Ajaka described the devastating effects: “Once they consume, depending on the quantity, the kidneys will pack up, the eyes will go, the brain will be damaged.” Authorities have initiated an investigation and reported the arrest of one suspect in connection with the incident.
