Heathens Clinch Uganda Sevens Title as Pirates Stumble

Heathens have been crowned the 2026 Uganda Sevens Champions, clinching their 13th title on the back of their rivals’ performance in the final leg at Wankulukuku.
Despite not needing to win the Kabaka Coronation Sevens tournament itself, Heathens secured the overall championship due to a surprising stumble by their closest rivals, Pirates.
Pirates, who held the strongest mathematical chance to overtake Heathens, had a disappointing outing. They managed a narrow 21-17 win against Kampani Eagles but then suffered consecutive defeats, losing 17-12 to Buffaloes and 19-12 to Walukuba Barbarians. This poor performance saw them finish third in their pool and eliminated from contention for the overall title.
Heathens, on the other hand, displayed resilience. After opening their campaign with dominant 26-0 victories over Mongers and Rhinos, they faced a 14-7 loss to Kobs. However, they regrouped effectively, securing a decisive 34-0 victory against Hippos in the quarterfinals.
This quarterfinal qualification was enough to guarantee Heathens the necessary points to clinch the overall championship. Even with Kobs finishing the season strongly, the points gap proved insurmountable. The triumph marks a significant achievement for coach Tolbert Onyango in his second season, guiding the team from second place last year to the championship summit.
