The Ugandan Catholic Church is mourning the loss of Rev. Fr. Dr. James Baziwandiika Kabuye, a priest whose musical genius left an indelible mark on liturgical worship. Fr. Kabuye, who passed away recently, is celebrated for his pioneering work in localizing the Catholic Mass through choral music, a journey he embarked upon in 1964.
His compositions have become integral to Catholic services across Uganda, with many familiar with the solemn funeral hymn “Tulizukira mu Kitiibwa Kya Yesu” (We Will Rise in the Grace of Christ) recognizing it as one of his most beloved works. This hymn, sung for over five decades, exemplifies his ability to blend traditional faith with local musical expression.
Fr. Kabuye’s dedication extended beyond composing; he was passionate about creating “Godly music” that resonated with the Ugandan faithful.
