Buganda NRM MPs Back Gen. Muhoozi for 2031 Presidency

Lawmakers from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) within the Buganda region have publicly declared their support for Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s aspirations for the presidency in 2031. This significant backing was formalized during a recent gathering at Serena Kigo, attended by both current NRM MPs from Buganda and former parliamentarians.
The event served a dual purpose: celebrating the NRM’s enhanced performance in the Buganda region during the 2026 general elections and strategizing for future party mobilization efforts. This endorsement follows a pattern seen in other parts of Uganda, where regional NRM leaders and legislators have previously voiced their support for Gen. Muhoozi’s 2031 presidential ambitions.
NRM leaders credited the party’s improved showing in Buganda to the “Buganda ku M7” initiative, a campaign spearheaded by 11th Parliament members to bolster support. Caucus Chairperson Robert Migadde highlighted the initiative’s success in narrowing the political gap with rivals, noting the significant increase in NRM representation from 29 to 63 MPs in the region.
Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka, also the PLU Regional Vice Chairperson for Buganda, lauded the parliamentary efforts but acknowledged internal disagreements that arose during the mobilization. He stressed the importance of reconciliation and unity within the party, urging members to prioritize collective progress over individual disputes.
The focus then shifted to Gen. Muhoozi’s 2031 bid, with attendees signing endorsement books. Kiwanuka emphasized the close alignment between the PLU and the NRM, stating they share common principles and political direction. The PLU has clarified that its current activities, including endorsements, are focused on mobilization within the NRM framework, rather than constituting a formal presidential campaign.
Migadde also appealed to President Museveni and Gen. Muhoozi to consider accommodating former MPs who contributed to the party’s mobilization efforts in Buganda but did not retain their seats in the recent elections. The gathering also included a symbolic celebration of President Museveni’s 82nd birthday.
