Advocates Push for Inclusive Workplaces and Accountable Disability Funding

Organizations, led by the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU), are campaigning for employers to actively embed disability inclusion within their organizational frameworks. The core message emphasizes the need for equal opportunities, allowing individuals with disabilities to develop their skills and access necessary tools for full workplace participation.

To support this, regional rehabilitation centers have been established across Uganda. These centers offer practical skills training in areas like sewing, carpentry, and tailoring, equipping persons with disabilities for the job market. The Special Presidential Assistant on Skilling and Education, Dr. Faith Mirembe Katana, highlighted these initiatives as crucial for equipping individuals with hands-on abilities.

Furthermore, NUDIPU now has a representative within the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) structures. This inclusion is expected to improve skill development outcomes for people with disabilities. Esther Kyozira, NUDIPU’s CEO, expressed optimism that this representation will lead to more tailored and effective training programs.

However, concerns regarding the misuse of funds allocated for disability support have also been raised. Lilian Namukasa, Program Manager at the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, has encouraged individuals to report any alleged misappropriation of these funds to the appropriate authorities. Strengthening accountability is seen as vital to ensuring that resources effectively reach their intended beneficiaries.

Ultimately, stakeholders believe that a combination of enhanced skills development, genuine workplace inclusion, and robust accountability mechanisms will pave the way for greater opportunities for persons with disabilities to contribute significantly to Uganda’s development.
