Women Encouraged to Own Property, Maintain Humility

Reverend Father Deogratius Kiibi Kateregga has called upon women across Uganda to diligently work towards acquiring and owning personal property, such as land. He stressed that while pursuing wealth, women should also strive to remain humble, loving, and caring to ensure peace within their families.

Fr. Kateregga’s message was delivered during a ceremony where over 400 land titles were distributed to members of the Paragon Land Investment Club, a group that facilitates land acquisition through savings. He specifically advised women property owners against becoming obstinate, encouraging them to uphold their roles as mothers, wives, and humble individuals regardless of their wealth.

His counsel comes at a time when some women property owners have faced societal labeling as “unruly.” While women’s rights advocates attribute this to patriarchal resistance against female economic independence, Fr. Kateregga condemned cultural practices that hinder women from owning land, stating that such beliefs often conflict with statutory laws guaranteeing equal land rights.

He cited the Constitution of Uganda and The Land Act, which affirm every individual’s right to own property and prohibit gender-based discrimination in land ownership. Fr. Kateregga encouraged women to believe in their capability to own property, even by starting small and thinking big, noting that the Bible does not limit women in this regard.

Challenging landless women, he recommended joining savings clubs like Paragon Land Investment Club to collectively raise funds and achieve land ownership. This initiative aims to help bridge the gender gap in land ownership and economic independence, as data shows a significant disparity between male and female household land ownership in Uganda.

Ms. Florence Nambooze Bbaale, CEO of Paragon Land Investment Club, highlighted that the club has successfully facilitated the handover of over 1,000 land titles to its members since its inception in 2019, reinforcing the message that landlessness can be overcome.
