Uganda Speaker Oboth Cultivates Stronger Ties with UK Parliament

Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Jacob Marksons Oboth, held a significant meeting with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the UK House of Commons, in London. This engagement is a key part of Oboth’s mission to revitalize the administrative systems and operational practices of the Ugandan Parliament, which has historically drawn inspiration from the British model.

Since taking office, Speaker Oboth has been a vocal proponent of restoring the Parliament of Uganda to its foundational principles and effective functioning. He views the UK Parliament’s extensive institutional history as a valuable resource for guidance and learning as Uganda embarks on its reform agenda.

“This is about consolidating our efforts to reset, revive and rejuvenate the management and affairs of the Parliament of Uganda,” Oboth stated, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the initiative. The visit also served as an exercise in parliamentary diplomacy, aiming to deepen the long-standing relationship between the two legislative bodies.

Oboth expressed his desire for mutual benefits through structured staff and member exchanges, practical attachments, and benchmarking programs. He further proposed the creation of an inter-parliamentary network to champion bilateral interests in critical areas such as education, trade, and mining, highlighting the significant potential for shared growth.

“Such parliamentary relations should be strengthened to a level that brings the two parliaments and the two nations closer in jointly pursuing shared interests,” Oboth remarked. Sir Lindsay Hoyle congratulated Speaker Oboth on his leadership role and acknowledged his visionary approach, affirming the UK Parliament’s readiness to support and advance inter-parliamentary diplomacy.

Hoyle also situated the discussions within the broader context of the Commonwealth, suggesting that parliamentary diplomacy could play a crucial role in preserving and strengthening the Commonwealth family. He expressed optimism that such collaboration could foster closer ties among African nations within the Commonwealth, enabling them to pursue a unified agenda.

This meeting is anticipated to pave the way for a formal cooperation framework between the Ugandan and UK Parliaments, with both sides indicating a willingness for future exchanges in governance, trade, and education.
