Uganda Launches Major Fuel Hub to Bolster Energy Security Ahead of Oil Production

President Yoweri Museveni has officially launched the construction of the Kampala Storage Terminal (KST), a substantial new fuel hub set to bolster Uganda’s energy security. The facility, located on 300 acres of land in Namwabula, Mpigi District, will boast an impressive 320-million-litre capacity.

This new terminal represents a significant leap in Uganda’s fuel storage capabilities. It will work in tandem with the existing Jinja Storage Terminal, which currently holds 30 million litres. Upon completion, the KST will raise the country’s total fuel storage capacity to 360 million litres.

Officials have highlighted the strategic importance of this project, emphasizing its role in safeguarding the nation against potential fuel shortages. The increased capacity is expected to provide a crucial buffer, ensuring a consistent supply of fuel even during times of crisis or supply chain disruptions.

The development comes as Uganda prepares to join the ranks of oil-producing nations. Experts suggest that enhanced fuel infrastructure is vital for managing the economic implications of domestic oil production and ensuring that the country can effectively meet its energy demands. The KST project signifies a forward-thinking approach to energy management and economic development.

The Shs1.2 trillion ($310 million) investment in the Kampala Storage Terminal underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening its energy infrastructure and preparing for future economic growth driven by the oil sector.
