Tooro Kingdom mourns Prince David Kiijanangoma, laid to rest after battling cancer

Prince David Kiijanangoma, a prominent member of the Tooro Babiito royal family, was laid to rest at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal on Friday. The 59-year-old prince succumbed to cancer, leaving behind his wife, seven children, and a kingdom grieving the loss of a passionate advocate.
His burial comes shortly after the passing of King Oyo, who died on August 27 and was interred on September 12, making this the second royal funeral in a span of weeks.
Prince Kiijanangoma’s later years were marked by a significant reconciliation with his cousin, the late Omukama Oyo. The two had a contentious relationship in the past, with Prince Kiijanangoma opposing King Oyo’s reign in 2015. However, they managed to mend ties in 2017.
Prince Edward Rukidi Kiijanangoma, now designated as the next Omukama of Tooro and named Nyabongo I, expressed gratitude for the reconciliation. He shared that Prince Kiijanangoma had written to King Oyo seeking forgiveness, a gesture that was reciprocated before the prince’s death.
President Yoweri Museveni, in a condolence message, acknowledged the double tragedy for Tooro and praised Prince Kiijanangoma’s dedication to preserving the kingdom’s cultural identity and his potential for contributing to its development.
His wife, Winnie Mbabazi, remembered him as a generous man, a gifted writer with unfulfilled literary ambitions, and a devoted father. She noted that while his books may not have been written, his life’s story was etched in the hearts of those he touched.
