President Yoweri Museveni’s 82nd birthday, which falls on September 15th, will be marked by a large public celebration on Saturday, September 19th, at Kololo Independence Grounds. Organized by supporters and the office of the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, the event is intended to celebrate the peace and stability they attribute to his long tenure.
A pre-birthday prayer event was held earlier this week, bringing together politicians, religious leaders, and supporters to reflect on Museveni’s political journey and leadership. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who represented the President, lauded his “wise leadership” and highlighted Uganda’s progress in education, health, and economic development. She specifically noted that 82 percent of Ugandans are now literate, facilitating investment.
Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Sanjay Tanna, expressed gratitude for Museveni’s life and intellect, acknowledging the role of him and other NRA veterans in securing peace. He cautioned against taking peace for granted, citing regional instability in countries like Somalia, South Sudan, and the DRC. Tanna also credited Museveni with transforming the nation’s infrastructure and economy, contrasting it with past shortages and poor infrastructure.
Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, described Museveni as a “towering reservoir of wisdom, courage, patriotism, and strategic leadership,” whose life story inspires generations. She emphasized his role in guiding Uganda through difficult times towards peace, unity, and socio-economic progress.
Ms Hadija Namyalo Uzeiye from the NRM chairman’s office urged Ugandans to protect the current peace and join the celebration at Kololo. NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong referred to Museveni as a teacher, mentor, and father, emphasizing his lifelong dedication to ordering the country.
In a message read by the Prime Minister, President Museveni reflected on the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle, acknowledging both combatants and civilians, particularly peasants, whose vision transcended personal gain. He stressed the importance of remembering these heroes and urged Ugandans to contribute to national development to uphold their spirit of self-sacrifice and commitment.
