Nuwabeine challenges Makindye East election results, cites candidate's qualifications

Judith Nuwabeine, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for Makindye Division East, has lodged a petition with the High Court seeking to overturn the parliamentary election results. Nuwabeine is challenging the nomination and subsequent victory of Kasirye Nganda Ali, who ran under the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
At the heart of Nuwabeine’s petition is the assertion that Kasirye Nganda Ali did not possess the minimum academic qualifications mandated by law to contest for a parliamentary seat. The petition details concerns about the candidate’s academic documents and a name change that occurred shortly before his nomination, arguing that the qualifications presented were obtained prior to this legal name alteration.
Furthermore, Nuwabeine contends that the academic records themselves are questionable, citing alleged inconsistencies in names across various identification and educational documents. She points to purported failures in some subjects on Kasirye’s Ordinary Level (UCE) and Advanced Level (UACE) results, suggesting they do not meet the threshold for parliamentary candidacy.
Beyond the candidate’s qualifications, the petition also accuses the Electoral Commission of failing to adhere to electoral laws. Allegations include the alteration of results from polling stations, voter suppression, and incorrect tallying and declaration of votes. Nuwabeine claims that some of her votes were misallocated to other candidates and that certain Declaration of Results forms were incomplete or improperly signed.
Kasirye Nganda Ali was declared the winner with 17,700 votes, compared to Nuwabeine’s 15,522. Nuwabeine states she had previously raised her concerns about Kasirye’s qualifications with the Electoral Commission, but her complaint reportedly remained unresolved. She is asking the court to set aside Kasirye’s election, declare him illegally nominated, and recognize her as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Makindye Division East, while also seeking legal costs.
