Kisoro Faces Extended Period of Heavy Rains and Disasters Until 2027

Authorities in Kisoro District, located in Uganda’s southwestern mountainous region, have issued a stern warning to residents about the impending likelihood of severe weather conditions. Meteorological forecasts suggest that the district could experience rainfall patterns unprecedented in the last 150 years, with heavy rains, floods, landslides, and lightning strikes expected to persist through 2027.

This warning comes after a series of recent weather-related disasters that have already impacted the community. Kisoro’s challenging topography, characterized by steep hills and proximity to the Virunga mountain range, makes it particularly susceptible to the destructive forces of heavy rainfall. Runoff from these elevated areas can easily trigger devastating floods and landslides in lower-lying areas.

Recent incidents highlight these vulnerabilities. In February 2026, flash floods originating from Mount Muhabura caused significant damage to crops and a critical tourism road. In the same month, two children lost their lives to fast-moving floodwaters while collecting firewood. Tragically, the district has a history of deadly landslides, with incidents in December 2023 and May 2023 resulting in multiple fatalities.

Unice Akankwasa, the Kisoro District Environment Officer, emphasized the potential for these anticipated rains to cause widespread destruction to crops, property, and infrastructure, posing a significant risk to human lives. She also noted that this forecast follows a dry spell that has already led to crop failures and water shortages in some parts of the district.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid dangerous behaviors during downpours, such as traveling, cultivating, washing utensils outdoors, or seeking shelter under trees. The advice also includes precautions against lightning, such as switching off electronic devices and keeping windows and doors closed during thunderstorms.

As Kisoro braces for this prolonged period of severe weather, local authorities implore the community to heed these warnings and take necessary precautions to mitigate the risks associated with floods, landslides, and lightning.
