Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo has publicly opposed plans to redevelop the city’s central open space, City Square. He stressed the importance of maintaining such areas for the benefit of the city’s environment, as recreational zones, and for crucial emergency response operations.
In a telephone interview, Mayor Balimwezo stated that City Square, historically known as Government Square and later renamed Constitution Square in 1995, must remain an accessible public area. He argued that any development could compromise its fundamental purpose and value to the citizens of Kampala.
The Lord Mayor’s stance comes amid proposals for a new complex to be built on a portion of City Square. This green space holds significant historical and monumental value, with a 2007 government order designating it as a protected site, explicitly barring commercial or private investment.
Balimwezo’s intervention highlights a growing concern over the diminishing green spaces within Kampala. He believes that preserving areas like City Square is vital for the city’s long-term sustainability and the well-being of its residents, providing essential breathing room amidst rapid urbanization.
