Ibanda Residents Gripped by Fear as Killings Surge

Residents of Ibanda District are experiencing a pervasive sense of fear due to a disturbing rise in violent deaths over the last month. Reports indicate that at least ten homicides have occurred across various sub-counties and the municipality. The incidents range from domestic violence and land disputes to brutal night-time attacks by suspected thugs.

The latest victim, 68-year-old Wilson Turyasasira, a bicycle mechanic, was found dead on September 15, his body discovered bound and dumped near a eucalyptus plantation. His family suspects he was targeted for money he had withdrawn for his children’s school fees, highlighting the potential for opportunistic violence.

Local leaders have pointed to specific areas, like the plantation near the Equator line, as notorious “dark spots” where criminals allegedly lie in wait. These secluded areas are said to be exploited by assailants who prey on unsuspecting individuals.

The Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Godfrey Mbetegyereize, acknowledged the escalating security concerns and attributed the killings to a mix of factors including drug abuse, theft, domestic altercations, and land disagreements. He stated that these acts are not only causing public anxiety but also threatening to disrupt economic activities within the district.

In response, the district security committee plans to reintroduce night patrols in identified hotspots and organize community sensitization meetings. However, officials admit that limited manpower, vehicles, and fuel present significant challenges to effectively combating the crime wave. Addressing the root causes and motives behind these violent acts is emphasized as crucial for restoring safety.

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and avoid isolated areas after dark. The authorities are also planning community gatherings, known as barazas, to raise awareness about the contributing factors, such as drug abuse and family conflicts.
