Ibanda Residents Demand Proactive Security Amidst Rising Murder Rate

Fear is palpable in Rwengwe Parish, Ibanda District, as residents voice urgent calls for enhanced community security measures. The community is particularly concerned following the brutal killing of a 68-year-old woman and her 19-year-old grandson, allegedly by unknown assailants.

These recent tragedies have heightened anxiety, with locals appealing to leaders and security agencies for more proactive crime prevention strategies. Residents emphasize that sporadic interventions after crimes occur are insufficient. They are advocating for continuous security sensitization and robust community policing programs.

“The government usually comes when an incident has happened, but we need continuous efforts to prevent these crimes before people lose their lives,” one resident stated, highlighting the community’s desire for preventative action.

Another resident urged local leaders to foster closer collaboration with the community to identify potential security threats and encourage the reporting of suspicious activities. “We want our leaders to engage us regularly on security matters so that we can work together to prevent these killings,” they added.

Ibanda Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Mbetegyereize, acknowledged the growing concerns over the escalating murder rate. He echoed the residents’ sentiments, calling upon local leaders to intensify security awareness campaigns and encourage residents to report suspicious behavior to the authorities.

Mbetegyereize stressed that strengthened cooperation among communities, local leaders, and security forces is crucial for effective crime prevention and enhanced public safety. Official figures indicate that at least 11 people have been murdered under unclear circumstances in Ibanda District in under three months, intensifying demands for increased vigilance and community involvement.

While residents express readiness to partner with authorities, their primary demand remains for consistent security interventions rather than reactive measures. They seek a commitment to sustained safety efforts to prevent further loss of life.
