The district of Ibanda is grappling with a surge in violence after two more lives were tragically cut short. Norah Tumwebaze, 68, and her grandson Deo Emmanuel, 19, were reportedly hacked to death by unknown assailants on Wednesday night in Rwengwe Parish, Kikyenkye Sub-county.
The alarming event has pushed the total number of reported murder cases in Ibanda District to ten over the past two months, raising significant security concerns among residents and local leaders.
Felix Tumuhirwe, the village chairperson of Rwengwe Parish, stated that he was alerted to the attack by school children on Thursday morning. He promptly informed the police upon receiving the distressing news.
The husband of the deceased woman, Gabrioza Mpabitsi, revealed that the couple had been targeted by assailants approximately a week prior. During that previous incident, the attackers, who found no one at home, allegedly killed two goats before leaving.
Local leaders are now calling for a thorough investigation into the escalating murder rate within the district. They emphasize the urgent need for security agencies to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Police have appealed to the public for any information that could aid their investigation and have urged residents to remain calm. The bodies of Tumwebaze and Emmanuel have been transported to Ruhoko Health Centre IV for postmortem examinations as the investigation continues.
