Busujju Election Petition: Mubende High Court Sets October 10 for Hearing

The Mubende High Court has officially set October 10, 2026, as the date to commence hearing the election petition concerning the Busujju Constituency parliamentary seat. The case pits NRM candidate Vincent Nyanzi Makumbi against the incumbent, NUP’s David Lukyamuzi Kalwanga, with the Electoral Commission also named as a respondent.

Presiding over the initial proceedings, Justice Mary Babirye directed the involved parties to first deliberate and reach an agreement on the procedural path for the case. Cameras were not permitted in the courtroom during this session.

After nearly three hours of discussions, the petitioner, the respondent, and the Electoral Commission managed to come to a consensus regarding how the trial would move forward. The court session reportedly experienced some tension due to the involvement of Saulo Nyakaana Kalwanga, the brother of the incumbent MP, who has publicly declared his intention to see his brother unseated.

Saulo Nyakaana Kalwanga expressed his determination to ensure the petitioner, Nyanzi, ultimately takes his place in Parliament. He stated his belief that the court should thoroughly examine the issues raised in the petition, which he anticipates will lead to the nullification of his brother’s election victory.

Meanwhile, NRM candidate Vincent Nyanzi Makumbi, the petitioner, chose not to make any public comments regarding the ongoing legal challenge. David Lukyamuzi Kalwanga, the incumbent MP, conveyed his confidence in the judicial process and his legal team from Alaka and Company Advocates, asserting his belief in a fair ruling.
