Busoga's succession struggle holds lessons for Tooro, elders advise

The lengthy dispute over the Kyabazinga throne in Busoga Kingdom, which lasted for six years following the death of Kyabazinga Henry Wako Muloki in 2008, offers significant lessons for other traditional institutions facing similar challenges, particularly the Tooro Kingdom.

According to elders and stakeholders familiar with the Busoga situation, the kingdom was divided over who should succeed the late Kyabazinga. A faction supported one of Muloki’s sons, while others argued that the position was not hereditary, leading to prolonged confusion and a vacuum in leadership.

Ultimately, Busoga managed to restore peace and stability through consistent dialogue and consultation with President Yoweri Museveni. This engagement was crucial in navigating the complexities of the succession issue and finding a resolution.

The experience highlights the importance of established customs, the role of traditional leaders, and the need for clear succession planning within cultural institutions. It also underscores the potential benefit of involving national leadership in mediating such sensitive matters to prevent protracted conflicts.
